Indian American lawmakers have expressed opposing stances on the Israel Security Appropriations Act passed by the House of Representatives on Apr. 20.
The aid package allocates some US$26.38bn for Israel, including $17 billion in defense aid. Israel Prime Minister welcomed the funds stating “ "When Israel is strong, the US is more secure.”
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, Rep. Ro Khanna, and nearly 20 other lawmakers, who voted against the resolution said, “Our votes against H.R. 8034 are votes against supplying more offensive weapons that could result in more killings of civilians in Rafah and elsewhere. We believe strongly in Israel’s right to self-defense and have joined colleagues previously in affirming our shared commitment.”
“All of us support strengthening the Iron Dome and other defense systems and we are committed to a sovereign, safe, and secure future for Israel. To protect that future, we believe the United States must help achieve a ceasefire that allows hostages to be freed, humanitarian aid to be delivered, and peace talks to begin,” the statement added.
On the other hand, Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi and Rep. Ami Bera, the senior Democrat serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence supported the bill.
\“Last weekend’s unprecedented drone and missile attack by Iran on Israel underscored the strength of Israel’s defense capabilities. This legislation replenishes Israel’s Iron Dome and David’s Sling missile defense systems and provides other critical security assistance to further strengthen the security of Israel and its people. I remain supportive of the Biden administration’s efforts to restore stability and avoid further escalation in the region,” Bera said.
