Indian American lawmakers welcome aversion of government shutdown
The bill received approval from the House of Representatives with a vote of 314 to 108.

US Representatives Ami Bera and Pramila Jayapal have welcomed the bipartisan majority of the House of Representatives to avert the partial government shutdown.
On January 18, the United States Congress passed a short-term spending bill, the third in this fiscal year, to prevent a government shutdown on January 20 as funding ran out.
The bill received approval from the House of Representatives with a vote of 314 to 108, with 107 Republicans and 207 Democrats supporting the legislation. The bill is now headed to US President Joe Biden's desk for signing.
President Biden is anticipated to sign the bill, thereby avoiding a government shutdown scheduled for January 20. The bill, marking the third stopgap spending measure of the fiscal year, will extend government funding at existing levels until March 1 for certain agencies and until March 8 for others.
“I voted for the latest bipartisan continuing resolution to keep the government open. While this legislation is necessary to keep the government functioning, governing from crisis to crisis is no way to run the government,” Rep Bera said in a statement adding that House Republicans have failed to uphold their end of the bargain.
“In May, I joined a broad bipartisan majority in voting for the Bipartisan Budget Agreement to establish top-line spending numbers and prevent harmful funding cuts for critical priorities from education and health care to housing and transportation,” Bera said.
“Moving forward, I will continue urging bipartisan cooperation to pass a comprehensive, long-term government funding bill in line with the Bipartisan Budget Agreement,” he asserted.
Highlighting the incapability of her Republican colleagues, Rep. Jayapal also expressed her concerns in a post on the social media platform X. “Once again, a huge group of extreme MAGA Republicans in the House voted to shut down the government. And once again, Democrats come to the rescue to provide the votes to keep the government open. The GOP isn’t a serious party and they cannot be trusted to govern.”
