In light of the four-day truce between Israel and Hamas, US Representatives Ami Bera, Shri Thanedar, and Ro Khanna have issued statements welcoming the development. The agreement involves the release of numerous hostages who were taken captive by Hamas militants on October 7 during an incursion into Israeli communities, as well as the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israel.

“It is my hope that the Biden administration can leverage this momentary pause to advance negotiations towards a more promising future – one that guarantees the security of the Israeli people while allowing the Palestinian people to live a life of dignity and respect, “ Rep. Bera said.

“As a doctor and a member of Congress, the events of October 7, and the tragic loss of innocent civilian lives in the subsequent weeks, have been truly heart wrenching. Having met with Israeli families who have had loved ones taken hostage and listening to the stories of Palestinian American constituents who have suffered the loss of their own relatives has underscored the urgent need for a different path forward,” he added.

Taking to social media platform X, Rep. Shri Thanedar said, “This is similar to the humanitarian pause I called for. We should use this time to bring as many hostages as possible to safety without giving Hamas time to regroup.”

“Hopeful 50 hostages will be released and multi-day ceasefire. Every American, Israeli and innocent hostage must be released. Once deal, the ceasefire should be permanent so all hostages released, aid gets in, the violence ends, the Oct.7 perpetrators face justice & the rebuilding begins,” Rep. Ro Khanna said in a post on X.

The temporary truce was agreed upon due to mediation by Qatar, Egypt and the U.S. It includes the release of 50 civilian women and children hostages currently held in the Gaza Strip in exchange for the release of a number of Palestinian women and children detained in Israeli prisons, the Qatari foreign ministry said in a statement. "The number of those released will be increased in later stages of implementation of the agreement," it maintained.
