Lakmé Fashion Week 2025, in collaboration with the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), took place at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai. The event featured a mix of well-known Indian designers and emerging talent, exhibiting a blend of luxury and sustainability. Notably, the week strongly focused on the connection between the Indian American community and the Indian fashion industry, featuring numerous prominent figures.

Indian-American actor Kal Penn was chosen as the host of the landmark 25th Lakmé Fashion Week gala. Kal Penn is an American actor famous for roles in the ‘Harold & Kumar’ films and TV shows such as ‘House’ and ‘Designated Survivor’. He notably took a break from acting to serve in the Obama White House Office of Public Engagement. Penn’s hosting performance was well received and his conversation with Kareena Kapoor Khan was particularly well-loved and shared extensively on social media.

Additional attendees included Los Angeles-based actress Richa Moorjani, known for her work in popular television series ‘Never Have I Ever’, influencer and TV personality Jessel Taank, and entrepreneur Anjula Acharia. Their presence emphasized the growing interest and participation of the Indian American diaspora in India’s leading fashion events. Kal Penn and Jessel Tank also made fun of the perceived NRI vs. Indians fashion war by filming a light-hearted Reel for an India-based fashion Instagram platform—Diet Sabya.

Reflecting on her first LFW experience, Richa Moorjani expressed deep respect: “Such an honor to attend LFW for my first time and for such a momentous and emotional occasion. Absolutely in awe of the unbelievable artistry and passion I witnessed this week. To see the evolution of the Indian fashion industry over the years and the global recognition it is finally receiving fills me with so much pride. I have always said and maintained—absolutely nothing compares to Indian craftsmanship.”

Jessel Taank captured the energy of the event, and praised a renowned designer: “‘More is more’ has always been my mantra. Kicking off 25 years of unparalleled fashion with Lakme Fashion Week, Fashion Design Council of India and the undisputed queen of excess—Anamika Khanna just reaffirmed the strength in being extra.”

The strong presence of Indian American celebrities and influencers such as Kal Penn, Richa Moorjani, Jessel Taank, and Anjula Acharia at Lakmé Fashion Week 2025 was more than just star power. It showcased the deepening relationship between the American Indian diaspora and the Indian fashion industry. Their participation underscored the increasing global appeal and recognition of Indian design and workmanship, while simultaneously building bridges across continents and strengthening shared cultural pride.
