Indian-American named California’s new dental director

Shakalpi Pendurkar is expected to bring extensive public health and dental expertise to the role.

California Governor, Gavin Newsom, announced the appointment of Indian-American dentist Shakalpi Pendurkar as the State Dental Director at the California Department of Public Health . 

Pendurkar, a seasoned dental professional, brings a wealth of experience to her new role. Since 2003, she has been the lead supervising dentist at Gardner Health Services in Los Gatos. 

Most recently, she served as the Dental Health Administrator in the Office of Dental Health at the Alameda County Public Health Department from 2021 to 2023.

She also served as the Dental Director of the Health Plan of San Mateo and the Director of Oral Public Health Programs at the San Mateo County Public Health Department from 2018 to 2021. Her experience extends to the national level, having worked as an Epidemiology Consultant for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 1997 to 1999.

A member of several professional organizations, including the American Dental Association and the American Public Health Association, Pendurkar holds a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University and a Master of Dental Surgery degree from mumbai’s,Nair Hospital Dental College. 

Her appointment does not require Senate confirmation, and she will receive an annual compensation of $190,908. Pendurkar, a Democrat, is known for her advocacy in improving dental health access and her leadership roles in various health coalitions and professional societies.
