Rep. Debbie Lesko of Arizona’s Congressional District 8 announced the winners of the 2023 Congressional App challenge. Indian-origin students Om Bankar and Aayush Abhilash took the top honors.
Sixth-grade students at BASIS Peoria, Bankar and Abhilash created an app called FinEdForKids, which provides students with resources to achieve financial literacy at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, according to a statement from Rep. Lesko’s office.
“To live a comfortable life, we must understand how money works and acquire financial knowledge,” said Bankar in a YouTube video that explains what the app is about. “Financial literacy is not taught in schools. Although it is essential to make better decisions in life and achieve long-term stability,” Abhilash added in the video.
As per the creators, FinEdForKids equips young students with the knowledge and skills to make better informed and responsible money decisions throughout their lives in a fun and engaging way. The app has quizzes, lesson plans, and a money dictionary which will help students in their learning journey.
The app’s interface allows students to evaluate their financial literacy level – beginner, intermediate, and advanced. There are a series of questions that students need to answer for the app to determine which category they fall into. The students will then be directed to take ten lessons at the end of which they will need to take quizzes to graduate to the next level, advanced being the final.
Additional resources like books and educational videos related to finance are available on the website. Rep. Lesko presented first prize winners Bankar and Abhilash with their certificates.
“I am so pleased to congratulate Om Bankar and Aayush Abhilash for winning this year’s Congressional App Challenge for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District,” she said. “FinEdForKids is a commonsense app that will hopefully educate children of all ages on how to use and save their money for the future. It is an honor to represent so many bright students, and it is wonderful to see them using their talents and creativity through these apps to help others!”
Apart from certificates, Bankar and Abhilash will attend the House of Code Reception on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. on April 10-11.
