Indian American physician and researcher Dr. Inderpal Randhawa is leading an innovative approach to treating severe food allergies at the Food Allergy Institute (FAI).
At the institute, founded by Randhawa, treatments combine artificial intelligence, data analytics, and immunology, utilizing allergen-laced gummy candies to help patients build a tolerance to allergens.
The Tolerance Induction Program involves gradually exposing patients to small proteins from various allergens, such as peanuts, mustard, pine, and flax, with their responses closely monitored through advanced data analytics.
“Our work has changed the way we approach food allergies,” said Randhawa. “Combining multiple fields allows us to advance treatment methods at a faster pace.”
Born in Galveston, Texas, and raised in Southern California, Randhawa was inspired by his Indian immigrant father's veterinary career to pursue medicine.
Randhawa's interest in food allergies was sparked by his observations of fatal reactions and a desire to find a better solution. His multidisciplinary background, including a degree in biological sciences from USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and experience in immunology research, laid the groundwork for this innovative approach, USC Dornsife reported.
FAI’s Tolerance Induction Program has already put over 15,000 patients into remission, allowing them to safely consume allergens that were once life-threatening. Randhawa continues to push the boundaries of medical science, integrating emerging technologies like AI to enhance treatment efficacy.
“I’ve never wanted to be in a box,” said Randhawa. “I am studying outside of the typical areas and bringing that knowledge back to my fields to advance things faster.”
