Indian American Teenager debuts period-positive collection at NYFW

The "Embrace the Flow" collection will officially launch to the public on Sept. 8, 2024.

The Global Girls Initiative, a non-profit working towards period poverty, founded by Indian-American teenager Aanya Patel is set to make a powerful statement at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) with the debut of its "Embrace the Flow" collection on Sept. 8, at Sony Hall. 

The collection, which aims to break the stigma surrounding menstruation, features t-shirts designed to ignite conversations about menstruation and raise awareness of period poverty, a critical issue affecting over 500 million menstruators worldwide. 

“Period poverty is a very real issue impacting over 500 million menstruators worldwide, but we can't solve an issue we're afraid to even talk about,” Patel emphasized, highlighting the importance of addressing this issue. "With this collection, we hope to spark conversation around periods and normalize menstruation. Gender equality can't be achieved without ending period poverty," she said. 

The runway show for the collection will feature not only fashion models but also prominent activists dedicated to menstrual health and gender equality. Among them will be Ose Ehianeta Arheghan, the 12th UNA-USA Youth Observer to the United Nations; Marije Broekhuijsen, a WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) specialist; and Laura Strausfeld, founder of Period Law.

According to a news release, proceeds from the collection will go toward installing menstrual product dispensers in school restrooms across the country, ensuring that no menstruator has to choose between their health and education.

Diane Vara, director of Public Relations and Communications at Runway7 Fashion, commended the initiative, saying, "Global Girls Initiative's Embracing the Flow at NYFW with Runway7 this season sets a powerful example for women everywhere.”

In the United States alone, one in five girls miss school due to a lack of access to period products, which impacts their education, confidence, and overall well-being. The Global Girls Initiative is dedicated to ensuring that menstruators, particularly in underserved communities, have access to the essential hygiene products and education needed to manage their cycles with dignity.
