A new comedy pilot starring Indian-American stand-up comedian Zarna Garg, inspired by her life as an immigrant woman navigating family and the American dream, has got a green light from CBS.
The series is a collaboration between Garg and Darlene Hunt, creator of The Big C, and is produced by Mindy Kaling's Kaling International, Kevin Hart's Hartbeat Productions, and Warner Bros. Television.
This narrative will mirror Garg's real-life path, having immigrated from India to the U.S. as a teenager, obtaining a BA and JD, and spending 16 years as a stay-at-home mom before venturing into stand-up comedy.
Garg's comedy career has been marked by significant achievements. In 2021, she won Kevin Hart's comedy competition, Lyft Comics, on Peacock. She also appeared in the 2022 Apple TV+ series Gutsy, hosted by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton. Her debut comedy special, Zarna Garg: One in a Billion, premiered on Amazon Prime Video last year.
The pilot for Zarna is set to begin production in early 2025, with a potential series premiere later that year. This development marks a significant move for CBS, as it is one of their most promising shows this season without involvement from renowned sitcom creator Chuck Lorre.
Garg expressed her excitement about the project on Instagram, sharing a post that reads, "Are we ready for this?"
