Indian comedy ‘Sister Midnight’ earns BAFTA nomination

Karan Kandhari's dark punk comedy ‘Sister Midnight’ has been nominated for the prestigious BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British writer, director, or producer. 

The film, which marks Kandhari’s feature film debut, has quickly gained attention in the film industry for its unique storytelling and bold social commentary.

Starring Radhika Apte as Uma, a woman navigating the complexities of an arranged marriage in Mumbai, Sister Midnight premiered at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in the Directors' Fortnight section on May 19. The film has since earned critical acclaim and multiple award nominations, including the Caméra d'Or at Cannes and the Golden Eye Award at the Zurich Film Festival.

Set for release in UK cinemas on March 14, Sister Midnight features an eclectic soundtrack with tracks from Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Holly, The Band, Motörhead, T. Rex, Blind Willie Johnson, The Stooges, and new music from Interpol’s Paul Banks.

Karan Kandhari, known for his 2009 short film Hard Hat, has been praised for his distinctive approach to storytelling, blending dark humor with sharp social insights. Sister Midnight stands out as a compelling addition to contemporary cinema, offering a fresh perspective on traditional narratives.

In addition to Sister Midnight, the Indian crime thriller Santosh has also earned a BAFTA nomination for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer. Written and directed by Sandhya Suri, an Indian-origin filmmaker, Santosh has already gained international recognition, including a spot on the Oscar shortlist for Best International Feature Film.
