Indian community holds vigil for Kashmir victims in New Jersey

The Indian community in the US continues to hold peaceful protests and candlelight vigils demanding justice for the 26 innocent men killed in a terrorist attack in Kashmir’s Pahalgam on Apr. 22.

The Federation of Indo American Seniors’ Association of North America (FISANA) and more than 35 Indian organizations organized a prayer and candlelight vigil in Indian market near Edison Cinema, in New Jersey on Apr. 27. Community members held placards and long banners, and raised slogans - “Bharat Mata Ki Jay”, and “Vande Mataram”.

Vishal J Harsh, the Deputy Consul General of India at the Indian Consulate of New York, assured the protestors that the Indian Government is going after every terrorist and their backers. Following the terrorist attack on Apr. 22, India announced the closure of the border with Pakistan, imposed restrictions on the special visa program, and announced other stringent measures.

Sam Joshi, Mayor of Edison Township, in a statement said innocent humans were killed and many left injured, and affected by the gunshots. “How many people must have suffered within an empathic framework of terror, and understanding and processing the tragedy,” he said. “India needs to stop the continuation of a long-standing pattern of cross-border terrorism.”

Piyush Patel, the Chairman of FISANA, condemned the cruel and brutal attack on Hindus. Suresh Patel-President of FISANA, highlighted that because of the Apr. 22 bloodshed, the majority of countries are now supporting India against the Pahalgam terrorist attack. FIA Chairman Ankur Vaidya also shared words of empathy, resilience and grief for the people in India and globally.

Senior members of FISANA urged the Indian government to strengthen border security.
