In response to a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that rattled parts of New York and New Jersey, the Consulate General of India in New York has reached out to the diaspora in the area.

In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Consulate addressed concerns regarding the safety and well-being of the Indian community in the affected region. Despite the significant tremors felt across the area, the Consulate assured that no Indian national or member of the diaspora has been reported injured thus far.

Additionally the mission also urged any citizen or diaspora member who was affected by the incident or in need of assistance to reach out on the official madad (help) portal.

“@IndiainNewYork is in touch with members of the Indian diaspora. No Indian national or member of diaspora is reported hurt so far. Any member of the Indian American community affected by the earthquake may please DM us or write to us on madad.newyork@mea.gov.in,” the post read.

“Not identified any life-threatening situations,” NY Governor

“This is one of the largest earthquakes on the East Coast to occur in the last century,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said in a press briefing on the government's response to the earthquake.

Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, Hochul said,  “At this point, heading into an hour and a half after the effects, we've not identified any life-threatening situations, but we are certainly asking our local law enforcement and emergency services teams to be on guard for that as well.”

Governor Hochul immediately mobilized emergency response teams to assess the damage and ensure public safety. She emphasized the need to evaluate infrastructure for potential vulnerabilities, including bridges and tunnels.

Hochul announced that in anticipation of the after shocks, JFK and Newark Airports are on full ground stops but the Amtrak and MTA are functional.

As New Jersey was the epicentre, Hochul expressed solidarity with the Governor Phil Murphy of New Jersey and offered assistance and exchanged crucial information regarding the impact. Furthermore, she added that the White House has reached out for assistance.

Highlighting the importance of preparedness, Governor Hochul urged New Yorkers to familiarize themselves with earthquake safety protocols, emphasizing the "drop, cover, and hold on" technique in the event of aftershocks. She stressed the significance of staying away from potentially compromised structures and conducting thorough inspections of homes for any signs of damage.
