The Indian government has issued an urgent advisory appealing to Indian nationals currently in Syria to evacuate the country as soon as possible via available commercial flights.

This advisory comes amid escalating tensions by major rebel forces, led by the group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). The rebels have captured several key cities, including Aleppo, Syria’s largest as the government fails to protect the strongholds.

“Those who can, are advised to leave by the earliest available commercial flights and others are requested to observe utmost precaution about their safety and restrict their movements to the minimum,” the travel advisory issued by the Indian Government on Dec. 6 reads.

For those unable to depart, the advisory stressed the importance of prioritizing personal safety by minimizing movements and exercising extreme caution. Additionally, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) shared an emergency helpline number and email ID for those requiring assistance.

The MEA’s advisory underscores New Delhi’s concern for the safety of its citizens amid Syria’s deteriorating conditions. The advisory also urged Indian citizens to refrain from traveling to Syria due to the worsening situation in the country.
