An Indian man has pled guilty to possession of materials involving the sexual exploitation of minors, U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans announced on Jan.8.

Abdul Rouvoof Shaik, 30, a former Carnival Cruise Lines employee, admitted to the charges in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 2252(a)(4)(B) and (b)(2). Shaik now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, a supervised release period of up to life, and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.

Shaik was arrested in July 2024 after special agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), found him in possession of child sexual abuse material at the Erato Street Cruise Terminal in New Orleans.

Sentencing is scheduled for Apr.16, 2025, before United States District Judge Ivan L.R. Lemelle.

This case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched by the Department of Justice in May 2006 to combat the rise of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

The initiative coordinates efforts between federal, state, and local agencies to locate, apprehend, and prosecute offenders while identifying and rescuing victims.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office acknowledged the assistance of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, HSI, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian M. Klebba, Chief of the Financial Crimes Unit, is prosecuting the case.
