Indian Olympic shooter Abhinav Bindra receives IOC Olympic Order

India's first individual Olympic gold medalist, Abhinav Bindra, received the Olympic Order from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on July 22. The accolade, the highest recognition by the IOC, acknowledges Bindra's contributions to the Olympic movement and sports development in India.
Bindra, 41, made history by winning the gold medal in the men's 10-meter air rifle event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His achievement not only placed India on the global map in shooting sports but also inspired countless young athletes across the nation.
Through his Abhinav Bindra Foundation, the Olympian has provided advanced sports technology and training to numerous athletes, integrating science and technology to enhance performance. His efforts have improved the infrastructure and support system for Indian sports, contributing to better training facilities and opportunities for athletes.
Bindra’s contributions extend to policy-making and athlete development. He served on the ISSF Athlete Committee and was appointed to the IOC Athlete Commission in 2018, focusing on mental health, financial stability, and entrepreneurship initiatives for athletes.

The Olympic Order, established in 1975, is awarded in three grades: gold, silver, and bronze. It recognizes individuals who have demonstrated exceptional merit in the cause of sport or rendered significant services to the Olympic Movement. The insignia features a collar with the five Olympic rings and the kotinos emblem, symbolizing the ideals of unity, friendship, and fair play.
Notable recipients of the Olympic Order include Nadia Comaneci, Indira Gandhi, and Nelson Mandela, among others.
