Indian-origin alumni honored by National Academy of Engineering

NAE membership is awarded to individuals who have pioneered new fields of technology, made significant advancements in traditional engineering fields, or introduced innovative approaches to engineering education.

Two Indian-origin University of California (UC) alumni,  Abhay Joshi and Radhakrishnan Nagarajan, have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), one of the highest honors in the field. They are among 128 new members and 22 international members in the NAE’s Class of 2025, recognized for their outstanding contributions to engineering practice, research, and education.

The awardees represent four University of California campuses—UC Berkeley, UC Irvine, UCLA, and UC San Diego along with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. In addition, 15 UC alumni from six campuses have been included in this year's distinguished group.

Honorees from UC

  • Joshi Abhay (UC Irvine, MBA), president and CEO of Axent Biosciences, was honored for “taking botulinum toxin medicines from initial lab-scale production to global commercialization and distribution.” He holds an MBA from UC Irvine, a PhD and MSE in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and a BTech in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi.
  • Radhakrishnan Nagarajan (UC Santa Barbara, PhD), senior vice president and chief technology officer for Optical Platforms at Marvell Technology, was recognized for “advances in high-speed lasers and photonic integration technologies.” 

Reacting to the honor, he shared on LinkedIn, “It is a great honor and privilege, given that this election covers all fields of engineering. This is about the high point in anyone’s engineering career.”

NAE membership is awarded to individuals who have pioneered new fields of technology, made significant advancements in traditional engineering fields, or introduced innovative approaches to engineering education. The newly elected members will be formally inducted at the academy’s annual meeting in October 2025.
