Indian-origin Canadian MP raises alarm over targeted violence against Hindus in Bangladesh
Arya announced plans for a rally on Sept. 23 in front of the Canadian Parliament to raise awareness of the ongoing situation.

Canadian Member of Parliament Chandra Arya has called for attention on the rising violence being committed against Hindus and other religious minorities in Bangladesh as the country faces periods of political instability.
Addressing the Canadian Parliament on Sep 16, the Indian-origin MP highlighted the ongoing attacks and displacement faced by Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians in the wake of recent unrest in Bangladesh.

I am deeply concerned by violence targeting religious minorities, including Hindus, Buddhists and Christians in Bangladesh.

"Every time there is instability in Bangladesh, religious minorities, particularly Hindus, bear the brunt," Arya told the House. He emphasized that the share of religious minorities in Bangladesh has drastically declined since the country gained independence in 1971.
"From 23.1 percent, including about 20 percent Hindus, the population has now dwindled to just about 9.6 percent, including 8.5percent Hindus," Arya noted, sharing concerns of Canadian Hindus with family ties in Bangladesh, who fear for the safety of their relatives, places of worship, and property.
Arya announced plans for a rally on Sept. 23 in front of the Canadian Parliament to raise awareness of the ongoing situation. The demonstration will also include participation from Canadian Buddhists and Christians with family members in Bangladesh.
Recent reports indicate that Hindu temples across 27 districts in Bangladesh have been targeted amidst the chaos. The Islamist political party Jamaat-e-Islami has acknowledged that religious minorities, including Hindus, have been particularly affected since the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. In addition, attacks on Awami League leaders and their homes have further fueled the violence.
