An Indian-origin CEO was arrested in connection with a high-end brothel investigation near Harvard University.
Anurag Bajpayee, co-founder and CEO of Boston-based clean water technology company Gradiant, is among several prominent individuals accused of soliciting sex services from women allegedly trafficked through luxury brothels operating out of upscale apartments in Cambridge and Watertown, Massachusetts.

Prosecutors allege that Bajpayee was part of an exclusive clientele—including doctors, lawyers, government contractors, and public officials—who paid up to $600 per hour for “girlfriend experience” encounters with predominantly Asian women. The brothels are suspected of serving as fronts for sex trafficking operations.
Bajpayee and others now face misdemeanor charges for allegedly purchasing sex services. According to the New York Post, the charges were filed earlier this year following a broader investigation into illicit operations in the Boston area.
Gradiant, founded by Bajpayee in 2013 as a spinout from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has expressed support for its CEO amid calls for his resignation.
Bajpayee completed his schooling at La Martiniere College in Lucknow, India, and earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He went on to pursue a master’s and a doctorate in mechanical engineering at MIT.
His doctoral research led to the development of a membrane-free desalination technique, recognized by Scientific American as one of the "Top 10 World-Changing Ideas."
The ongoing investigation has also implicated other notable figures, including Cambridge City Councilor Paul Toner, who faces similar charges.
