Indian-origin standup comedian Neel Nanda from Atlanta, Georgia, has died at the age of 32. The date and cause of death has been kept under wraps at the behest of his family and girlfriend.
Nanda’s longtime manager Greg Weiss confirmed the news of his passing to the entertainment website Deadline. “I [am] deeply shocked and saddened by this. He was a wonderful comic, but a better person,” Weiss stated, adding, “He had the world in front of him.”
In a statement to USA Today, Weiss said, “Neel was not (only a) great comic (but) a good friend and a fantastic human being." Weiss revealed that Nanda’s gig calendar was packed with appearances throughout January and February 2024. The final shows he performed were at the Jokers Theatre and Comedy Club in Toronto on December 15 and 16, which was his birthday weekend.
“On behalf of our entire Jokers team, please accept our deepest sympathies as we mourn the loss of a brilliantly funny soul. We send love and condolences to Neel Nanda’s family, friends, and fans. May he rest in peace,” read a message by the Jokers Club posted on their Instagram page.
Nanda moved to Los Angeles in 2013. Aside from performing at gigs across the country with some of the biggest comedy acts, Nanda had also made headway into the streaming and network shows space. He performed on Comedy Central’s (CC) Stand-Up Presents that aired in early 2023.
The young comedian appeared and performed stand-up on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel LIVE and on CC’s Adam Devine’s House Party. He also made notable appearances on MTV and IFC’s Garfunkel and Oates Show as well as Amazon Prime’s Inside Joke. His stand-up act is a part of Coming to the Stage on Hulu and several episodes of the series Flophouse for Viceland.
Nanda’s Los Angeles show Unnecessary Evil was named one of LA Weekly's top 10 stand-up shows, according to the USA Today report. Noted comedian Matt Rife who shared a friendship with Nanda took to X to pay tribute. “RIP Neel Nanda you were one of the nicest, hardest-working comedians I’ve ever called a friend and I hope you can be at peace brother,” he posted.
