Indian-origin Sukhvinder Singh Kang, 33, from Camberley, Surrey, was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on Sep.27 2024 after pleading guilty to multiple counts of fraud and providing unregulated immigration advice and services.
Kang, who targeted vulnerable young women between June 2020 and June 2021, received a 16-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months. He was also ordered to complete 150 hours of unpaid community work, attend 20 rehabilitation activity days, and pay compensation of USD$9697 (£8,832), in addition to a victim surcharge of USD$171 (£156).
Kang's fraudulent activities included posing as a Level 3 Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) immigration adviser. He deceived his victims through social media platforms, specifically targeting Facebook groups, where he provided forged certificates of his alleged qualifications. Kang assured the victims, through WhatsApp and text messages, that he would handle their visa applications and submitted them to the Home Office.
John Tuckett, Immigration Services Commissioner, underscored the importance of the case in protecting vulnerable individuals from unlawful immigration advice. “This investigation highlights the true value of our efforts in preventing illegal practices and protecting vulnerable individuals. OISC investigations operate across the UK to identify, disrupt, and eliminate the unlawful activities of unregistered immigration advisers," he said. “I would like to express my sincere appreciation to everyone who contributed to making this outcome possible.”
The OISC launched an investigation after the victims reported Kang, none of whom received the promised refunds or compensation after submitting significant sums of money and identity documents. Kang continuously assured his victims of refunds when they threatened to report him, but never followed through. His actions eventually led to the OISC’s intervention and successful prosecution.
