An Indian-origin man has died in an apparent road rage incident in Indiana. The entire incident was captured on a witness’ cell phone.
On the night of July 16, at Thompson and South Emerson, witnesses reported a confrontation between two armed drivers that escalated into a fatal shooting. When officers arrived, they found Gavin Dasaur shot in the street. The 29-year-old later died in the hospital.
Police reported that the driver of a white Chevy pickup truck, who fired the fatal shot, remained at the scene. He was questioned about the incident but was released later. Preliminary findings suggest that the shooter may have acted in self-defense, Fox59 reported.
Cell phone footage, recorded at the scene showed Gavin Dasaur exiting his car at the intersection. He was visibly angry and yelling at the pickup truck driver. A handgun was clearly seen in Dasaur's right hand.
As he approached the driver's side of the pickup, he punched the truck's door with the gun in his hand. After that, Dasaur switched the gun to his left hand and raised his right hand to the truck's window. The pickup driver responded by firing three shots which caused Dasaur to immediately fall to the ground. The shooter remained in his vehicle throughout the seven-second confrontation.
"I held him as he bled out and I was waiting for the ambulance," the victim's widow, Viviana ZaMora, the deceased's wife told The Indianapolis Star.
"We were so in love and had many plans for the future," she told the Star adding that they had recently married and had plans to start a family and travel the world.
According to media reports, although the decision to release the shooter was made after consulting with the prosecutor’s office, the case is not officially closed. Ultimately, it will be up to the prosecutor’s office to determine whether any charges should be filed in the case.
USA Today reported that an autopsy will be conducted by the Marion County Coroner’s Office to determine Dasaur's manner and cause of death.
