Indian-origin professor recognized as Pioneering Investigator by ‘Chemical Communications’

as was recognized for pioneering research in polymer simulations, advancing real-world applications and innovation.

Siddhartha Das, a mechanical engineering professor at the University of Maryland was recognized as a Pioneering Investigator by ‘Chemical Communications’, a prominent journal published by the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The journal recognized Das's work on molecular dynamics simulations of polymer and polyelectrolyte brushes, co-authored with Raashiq Ishraaq, which focuses on the properties of toothbrush-like chains of polymers or polyelectrolytes that can "functionalize" surfaces.

These brushes, which vary in size from a few nanometers to a few micrometers, have wide-ranging applications, including in diagnostics, sensing, current rectification, surface modification, drug delivery, and oil recovery. Das and his team use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to study behaviors and properties that are difficult to observe in laboratory experiments.

"By employing all-atom molecular dynamics simulations, we are able to study behaviors and properties that otherwise would elude researchers," Das said. "We have great confidence that this avenue of research will open up avenues to exciting real-world applications."

Das has published over 193 journal articles in leading publications like ‘ACS Nano, Advanced Materials, Nature Communications,’ and ‘Soft Matter’. His work spans multiple disciplines, with a focus on advancing the understanding of nanomaterials. He is also a fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Royal Society of Chemistry, which publishes ‘Chemical Communications’.

In July 2022, he was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Engineering Technology (IET), headquartered in the UK. Das holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, earned in 2010. He also completed his B.Tech. (Hons.) in mechanical engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 2005.
