The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) has announced its prestigious University Excellence Awards, which honor outstanding faculty and staff achievements. Among the distinguished nominees are Vikram Kapoor, Kevin Desai, Bonita B. Sharma, and Vidya Sharma, recognized for their contributions to teaching, research, and innovation.
Vikram Kapoor, a nominee in the Teaching Excellence category, is an associate professor at the College of Engineering & Integrated Design. Kapoor, who earned his B.Tech. in Biotechnology from Jaypee Institute of Information Technology University in India, serves as the Klesse endowed professor, associate professor, and division leader of civil & environmental engineering. He also holds the role of undergraduate advisor of record in Civil & Environmental Engineering.
In the University Service category, Kevin Desai has been nominated for his contributions to the College of Sciences. Desai, who holds a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from Nirma University in India, focuses his research on collaborative virtual environments, computer vision, and virtual/augmented/mixed reality technologies. He is an assistant professor of computer science.

Bonita B. Sharma, an assistant professor of social work in the College of Health, Community & Policy, has been nominated in the Advancing Globalization category for her impactful research. Sharma’s work spans sustainability, gender equality, global health, and human mobility. Her interdisciplinary research explores the intersection of technology, leadership, and social work on a global scale, reflecting her dedication to addressing pressing societal challenges.
Vidya Sharma has been nominated in the Innovation and Impact (I-Squared) category for her groundbreaking contributions in research and development.
The 2025 University Excellence Awards ceremony will take place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Apr.30 in the H-E-B Student Union Ballrooms on the UTSA Main Campus. The event will be led by UTSA president Taylor Eighmy, provost Heather Shipley, and executive vice president Veronica Salazar, alongside representatives from UTSA’s Faculty and Staff Senates.
This year, the awards process has been enhanced for staff nominees, introducing a multi-stage selection system that advances some candidates to semi-finalist status before final selections are made. The faculty selection process remains unchanged, with winners chosen directly from the list of nominees.
