Indian-origin software engineer Aashna Doshi, who completed six months at Google, recently shared six major lessons that have shaped her growth at the tech giant.
Her post titled ‘6 Months at Google—6 Things I’ve Learned So Far’, which talks about tackling imposter syndrome and embracing continuous learning, widely with professionals in the tech industry.

Imposter Syndrome is real - but so is growth
Stepping into a team of senior software engineers was initially daunting for Doshi. She admitted to feeling the weight of imposter syndrome but soon realized that asking questions was the key to growth. "The smartest engineers I’ve met are also the most generous with their knowledge," she wrote.
Building community makes a difference
Despite the high-pressure nature of the tech industry, Doshi emphasized the importance of a strong support system. She found a sense of belonging through groups like Women @ Google, student panels, and even a poker club. "The people you surround yourself with make all the difference," she noted.
Coffee chats are underrated
One of Doshi’s personal rules is to prioritize networking. She shared that setting up one or two casual coffee chats each week has provided invaluable career advice and unexpected opportunities. "Some of the best career advice comes from casual conversations," she remarked.
Ownership mindset matters
At Google, Doshi learned that success isn’t just about completing tasks—it’s about thinking critically, proposing ideas, and taking ownership. She highlighted how even small contributions in privacy and security could have a massive impact in protecting users.

While technical skills are critical, Doshi pointed out that strong communication skills set engineers apart. Being able to document decisions, explain work, and collaborate effectively makes a huge difference in cross-team discussions. "Learning how to present ideas has been a game-changer," she said.
Tech moves fast, so keep learning
Acknowledging that technology evolves rapidly, Doshi stressed the importance of staying updated. She highlighted how adapting to new security challenges, best practices, and refining skills is crucial in the ever-changing tech landscape. "The learning curve never flattens," she shared.

Doshi holds a master’s degree in computer science with a specialization in Machine Learning from the Georgia Institute of Technology. She also earned her bachelor’s degree in computer science from the same institution, specializing in intelligence and devices. Additionally, she has worked as a researcher at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay.
