Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 21 will lead the International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, marking a significant moment in the event's 10th edition.
The theme for this year, “Yoga for Self and Society,” underscores yoga's dual role in enhancing personal well-being and fostering social harmony. Union Minister of State for Ayush (Independent Charge), Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted this theme at a curtain raiser event on June 18.
“The enthusiastic participation of millions in recent years reflects the profound impact of yoga on communities,” Jadhav said as he emphasized the broad impact of yoga, noting its ability to nurture physical, mental, and spiritual growth while promoting societal cohesion.
The Minister announced that PM Modi has written to every Gram Pradhan (village president), encouraging grassroots participation to spread yoga's benefits in rural areas.
Since 2015, the prime minister has been a pivotal figure in promoting yoga globally. He has led IDY celebrations at various iconic locations, including Kartavya Path in Delhi, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Jabalpur, and even the United Nations Headquarters in New York. According to Jadhav, yoga's worldwide popularity and recognition have been greatly enhanced under Modi's leadership.
In the last decade, IDY has set four Guinness World Records, including the participation of 35,985 people performing yoga with Modi at Rajpath in 2015. Last year, around 234 million people worldwide participated in IDY events.
This year, the Ayush Ministry launched a 'Common Yoga Protocol Book in Braille' to aid visually impaired individuals and introduced the "Professor Ayushman" comic to engage children in yoga. In a unique initiative, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will have scientists and officials perform yoga together as part of the celebrations.
Various contests and activities, including the "Yoga with Family" video contest, have been launched to engage the masses, with participants encouraged to share their experiences using hashtags like #InternationalDayofYoga2024 and #YogaForSelfAndSociety.
