Indian women’s hockey coach resigns after tumultuous week
Schopman submitted her resignation after the team’s performance in the home leg of the FIH Hockey Pro League in Odisha

Janneke Schopman, chief coach of the Indian Women’s Hockey Team, has tendered her resignation to Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey.
Schopman took over from former chief coach Sjoerd Marine after she declined a contract extension.
Hockey India officially announced Schopman's resignation, marking the early end of her tenure, which was otherwise scheduled for August 2024. The decision came after the team’s underwhelming performance in the recent Olympic Qualifiers.
“At the back of the disappointment at the recent Olympic Qualifiers, her resignation has paved the way for Hockey India to look for a suitable Chief Coach for the Women’s Hockey Team who could prepare the Indian Team for the next Women’s World Cup in 2026 and Los Angeles Olympics 2028,” the statement noted.
Controversy Surrounding Schopman’s Resignation
Schopman’s resignation comes after she accused Hockey India of discrimination. Despite the recent victory against the USA in the FIH Pro League encounter, Schopman candidly shared her struggles and feelings of isolation, citing challenges faced as a woman coach in India.
She pointed out disparities in treatment between men's and women's coaches, shedding light on the difficulties she encountered in the country.
