The Modi-led alliance secured a majority in the elections; however, it was a significant drop since its 2019 win when it won 303 seats out of the 543-seat total. Meanwhile, the main opposition Congress party nearly doubled its 2019 seat share.
'The people of India have unequivocally rejected the BJP's agenda, which sought to undermine the constitution and transform the country,' said George Abraham, vice-chairman of the Indian Overseas Congress, USA. 'This election outcome is a resounding endorsement of the current constitutional framework, envisioned and implemented by Nehru and Ambedkar.'
IOCUSA noted that while the ruling party secured a majority, the BJP has not gotten a majority of its own. More importantly, the party’s candidate lost in Ayodhya, where Modi inaugurated the Ram Lalla temple earlier this year in what was described as a largely political move.
In light of the results, the organizationurged the ruling party to uphold the constitution in the formation of the next government. They also urged the party to encourage public opinion and cease to weaponize federal agencies and OCI cards to take away the rights to expression.
“The Fourth Estate (media) should be allowed to function freely, promoting objective journalism that reaches people without bias or prejudice. The judiciary ought to be respected for their independence and jurisprudence, “ they said in a statement.
IOCUSA also expressed gratitude to the Congress leaders eand those of the INDIA coalition, especially Congress president Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, for their efforts in campaigning and preventing a lanslide victory for the BJP.
“We express our special gratitude to all those IOC volunteers from across the globe who participated in the electoral process to save democracy back in their motherland,” they added.
