India’s ace badminton duo awarded Khel Ratna

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports announced the lineup of recipients for the National Sports Awards 2023

The Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports announced the National Sports Awards for the year 2023. The ceremony, scheduled to take place at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 9, 2024, will see the President of India felicitating the country's finest athletes and coaches for their outstanding contributions to sports.

The Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, the highest sporting honor in India, will be jointly conferred upon Chirag Chandrashekhar Shetty and Rankireddy Satwik Sai Raj for their achievements in Badminton. The duo's performances have won several laurels for the nation.

On the other hand, a total of 26 sportspersons are set to receive the Arjuna Award for their outstanding performances in various sports during the year 2023. The awardees include cricket Mohammed Shami, archer Aditi Gopichand Swami, track star Sreeshankar M, and chess prodigy R Vaishali, among others. The awards recognize their performance over the past four years.

The third category, Dronacharya Awards, honors coaches, for both Regular and Lifetime categories. The recipients include Lalit Kumar for wrestling, R. B. Ramesh for chess, and Mahaveer Prasad Saini for para-athletics in the Regular category. Lifetime achievement awards include Jaskirat Singh Grewal for golf, Bhaskaran E for kabaddi, and Jayanta Kumar Pushilal for Table Tennis.

The Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports and Games will be given to Manjusha Kanwar for badminton, and Vineet Kumar Sharma for hockey, among others. They have continued to contribute to the promotion of their respective sports even after their retirement.

The fifth category, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA) Trophy 2023, will be awarded to Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, for being the overall winner. Lovely Professional University, Punjab, and Kurukshetra University, Kurukshetra, secured the 1st and 2nd runner-up positions, respectively.

The selection process was headed by Justice A. M. Khanwilkar who ensured that deserving individuals were honored.
