India’s Human Development Index (HDI) has seen an improvement in 2022, as per the latest 2023/24 Human Development report, titled “Breaking the Gridlock: Reimagining Cooperation in a Polarised World.”
With this improvement, India has ranked 134th out of 193 countries and territories worldwide. The report underscores India’s strides across key HDI indicators, including life expectancy, education, and Gross National Income (GNI) per capita.
In 2022, India witnessed notable advancements in various aspects of human development. Life expectancy increased to 67.7 years, while expected years of schooling reached 12.6, and mean years of schooling rose to 6.57.
Additionally, GNI per capita showed growth from $6,542 to $6,951. Moreover, India exhibited progress in narrowing gender inequality, with its Gender Inequality Index (GII) value of 0.437 surpassing global and South Asian averages, as per a UNDP statement.
The report underscores India’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens, citing significant gains since 1990.
Over this period, life expectancy at birth surged by 9.1 years, expected years of schooling rose by 4.6 years, and mean years of schooling increased by 3.8 years. India’s GNI per capita has also seen substantial growth, expanding by approximately 287 percent.
While India’s progress is commendable, the global landscape presents challenges. Despite overall HDI improvement globally, the report notes a lingering impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, hindering a full recovery.
The world is now off track from achieving a “very high” HDI by 2030, as envisioned in the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Furthermore, inequality is on the rise again, with the gap between wealthy and poor nations widening, exacerbating global disparities.
Amidst these challenges, India stands as a beacon of progress in the Asia-Pacific region, demonstrating significant advancements in HDI since 1990.
However, the report underscores the urgent need for collective action to address inequality, polarisation, and other global crises, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in shaping a more equitable future.
