India’s life expectancy stands at 67 years

On a global scale, wealthy nations registered the longest life spans

The average life expectancy at birth in India was 67 years in 2021, According to the recent data available through the World Bank. For females the life expectancy was lower and stood at 68.1 years while for males it was 73.9 years. 

This is line with a recent report by the United Nation's Human Development Index which found that average life expectancy in India was 67.7 years in 2022 - up from 62.7 a year earlier.

Life expectancy declined globally for the second straight year in 2021, standing at 71 years. On a global scale, wealthy nations registered the longest life spans. Countries like Japan, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and South Korea recorded the highest number at 84 years. 

The United States, at the 60th spot globally, had a life expectancy of 76 years in 2021. Among the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, the US ranked 30th out of the 38 member states. 

Conversely, the United Kingdom had a higher life expectancy, of 82.2. At the opposite end of the spectrum, African nations such as Chad, Nigeria, and Lesotho had the lowest life expectancies at 53 years.
