Ratna Ghosh, professor emerita at Canada’s McGill University, will be honored with the university’s Lifetime Achievement Award for leadership in learning at the Fall 2024 Convocation scheduled for Dec. 2.
The award recognizes Ghosh’s sustained excellence in leadership, innovation, and integration of teaching and research over her more than four decades at the university.
Ghosh, a distinguished James McGill professor and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, has long championed equity, diversity, and inclusion in education. She was the first woman and person of color to serve as dean of McGill’s faculty of education, where she hired the first Indigenous scholar for the Office of First Nations and Inuit Education (OFNIE).
“Dr. Ghosh’s award is an apt reflection of her dedication, passion, and countless contributions to the field of education,” said Vivek Venkatesh, the Faculty of Education’s current dean. “She has succeeded in inspiring generations of students while also mentoring many of us who have had the privilege to work alongside her.
Her career spans leadership roles and accolades, including her appointment to the Order of Canada, the Order of Quebec, and the Order of Montreal. Her work in comparative and international education has influenced policies and programs across North America.
Notable among her initiatives was the creation of an anti-racism and intercultural course for pre-service teachers, addressing challenges in Canada’s diverse classrooms. Ghosh also served as a senior research affiliate with the Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security, and Society.
In reflecting on her career, Ghosh emphasized education’s pivotal role in addressing global diversity. “Diversity is not going away,” she said. “We need to seize this opportunity to reimagine pedagogy in more ethical terms.”
