Rice University's interdisciplinary team of scientists has secured a substantial $1.9 million research grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant is intended to support their research efforts focused on materials that have the potential to form the foundation for future energy-efficient computing devices.

The team, which includes co-investigator Ramamoorthy Ramesh, will concentrate on multiferroics, a class of materials characterized by unique electric and magnetic properties that hold significant technological promise. Ramesh, a prominent authority in this domain, highlighted that their research aims to harness the spin and charge properties of electrons in multiferroics to facilitate the processing and storage of information.

The project is funded by the NSF Future of Semiconductors (FuSe) program, which operates as a public-private partnership involving the NSF and four prominent technology corporations.  The FuSe initiative aims to “enable rapid progress in new semiconductor technologies and manufacturing as well as workforce development,” according to the agency’s website.

“By 2030, about 25 percent of global energy demand will come from electronics ⎯ that’s a pretty huge number,” said Ramesh, Rice’s executive vice president for research and professor of materials science and nanoengineering and of physics and astronomy. “With this FuSe grant, our goal is to lower energy consumption for computing. We put together a perfect team to help push the limits of the science and take significant strides toward actually making these low-energy computing devices a reality.”

Ramesh is a globally renowned figure in the fields of materials science and physics, particularly in their applications to the energy sector. Serving as the vice president for research, he plays a pivotal role in supervising Rice University's diverse research initiatives, both internally and externally.

Ramesh's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Madras University and a bachelor's degree in metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. He pursued further studies, earning both a master's and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from UC Berkeley.
