The Indian Overseas Congress, USA, (IOCUSA) held a prayer vigil to mourn Dr. Manmohan Singh's passing at the Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar in Hicksville, New York. Speakers took turns honoring his contributions and praising his leadership for the people of India.
IOCUSA is a key political and social organization in the U.S., affiliated with the Indian National Congress (INC). It focuses on promoting the interests of the Indian diaspora and strengthening ties between India and the global community.
George Abraham, vice-chair of IOCUSA, spoke about Dr. Singh's humility and how his personal qualities impacted the nation.
Abraham said, "He was a man of humility despite his long resume and outstanding accomplishments at the behest of the ordinary people with whom he identified himself. He conducted himself with the highest level of integrity and honesty that was a hallmark of his life as well."
Mohinder Singh Gilzian, president of IOCUSA, praised Dr. Singh’s commitment to India's progress and welfare. "His leadership shaped India into a global powerhouse, and his contributions to the welfare of the people will never be forgotten. His legacy of inclusive growth, bold economic reforms, and his commitment to the constitution and its values will forever remain an inspiration for all of us", Gilzian added.
Joshua Jaysingh, Treasurer of IOCUSA, highlighted Dr. Singh's leadership as a beacon of hope for marginalized and minority communities, reflecting his commitment to justice, equality, and inclusive growth.
Balbeer Singh Pahwa, president of Gurudwara Guru Nanak Darbar, emceed the event and shared, "Manmohan has brought India from the brink of bankruptcy with the country's foreign currency reserves at a dangerously low level, barely enough to pay for two weeks of imports. He made bold measures to change the nation's trajectory, and his name in the history book will be written in golden letters,”
IOCUSA leaders, including senior leader Leela Maret, along with community members Dave Randhawa, Amer Singh Gulshan, Sharat Chandra Vemuganti, and Sukhjinder Singh Badesha, also spoke at the event, remembering Dr. Singh’s steadfast commitment to public service and expressing how much he will be missed.
