Israeli embassy condemns trivialisation of holocaust in ‘Bawaal’

The Israeli envoy to India urged everyone alien to the horrors of holocaust to educate themselves about the tragedy.

Indian movie industry's latest offering ‘Bawaal’ has stirred a controversy over its portrayal of the holocaust tragedy. The holocaust was the genocide of European Jews during World War II.

The Israeli embassy in India said it was "disturbed by the trivialization" of the significance of the Holocaust in the film, a week after it was released in over 200 countries. Israel's envoy to India, Naor Gilon tweeted he did not watch the film "but from what I’ve read, there was a poor choice of terminology and symbolism." His tweet continued, "the trivialization of the Holocaust should disturb all." Gilon concluded by urging those who were unaware of the horrors of the holocaust to educate themselves about it.

As per a letter issued by the Simon Weisenthal Center which is dedicated to the memories of the holocaust victims, 'Bawaal' goes into graphic recall of the Holocaust in several scenes, including the one where the protagonists are seen entering a gas chamber in striped clothing and are suffocated. In another scene the male lead remarks to his wife, "We are all a little like Hitler, aren't we."

The holocaust resulted in the murder of six million European Jews and at least five million Soviet prisoners of war, Romany, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, and other victims, as per the National World War II Museum, New Orleans. “If the filmmaker’s goal was to gain PR for their movie by reportedly filming a fantasy sequence at the Nazi death camp, he has succeeded. Amazon Prime should stop monetizing Bawaal by immediately removing this banal trivialization of the suffering and systematic murder of millions of victims of the Nazi Holocaust,” Rabbi Cooper, SWC Associate and Director of Global Social Action said in the letter.
