ITServe members judge US Congressional App Challenge

Vinay Mahajan, president of ITServe Alliance, spoke to the participants at the event hosted by Illinois's 11th Congressional District.

Members of the ITServe Alliance, the biggest association of IT Services organizations in the United States were selected to serve as judges at last month's United States Congressional App Challenge Contest.

The Congressional App Challenge was started in 2013 by members of the United States House of Representatives with the goal of inspiring students to think outside the box and pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education.

High school students from all around the country can compete in the national contest by making and showcasing an application, or "APP" for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choosing. The students' competition is limited to those who live in their congressional district.

“We are extremely proud that Omprakash Nakka, Tanuj Gundlapalli, Jagan Chitiprolu, and Venkat Yerubandi, all active members of ITServe had the privilege of serving as Judges for the Congressional App Challenge Program,” said Vinay Mahajan, president of ITServe Alliance. “Such contests across the nation by Congressional Offices is very encouraging of our young and aspiring entrepreneurs and is in sync with the objectives of ITServe Alliance in promoting and advocating for local talents and resources that are aimed at the United States maintaining its leadership in technology and innovation,” Mahajan added.

At the event hosted by the 11th Congressional District in Illinois, Mahajan addressed the participants and offered his congratulations to the winner—a 10th grader from the state who created the Dermidetect app, an AI—that detects skin cancer.

Siva Moopanar, director of ITServe Alliance Policy Advocacy Committee (PAC), who has been instrumental in coordinating with the Congressional Offices for ITServe’s participation in the Congressional APP Challenge said, “We acknowledge that this program provides a great opportunity for us at ITServe to engage with Lawmakers and make a positive impact on our upcoming generation of innovators in Science and Technology.”

In recognition of the significance of the competition, ITServe has offered to collaborate directly with the organizers of the congressional app challenge and allocate funds from its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) STEM Funds to support this program. The alliance has advocated for and invested heavily on its STEM Education Program to promote the “American Ingenuity Account” to fund State-administered grants for STEM education and worker training.
