Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland will visit a grocery store in Toronto on Nov. 21 to talk about "food affordability" with customers and employees. Before the visit, Trudeau is expected to announce a "winter tax holiday."

This move is seen as a response to the ongoing criticism from the Conservative party about the rising cost of groceries and the housing crisis, which they say is making life less affordable for Canadians.

The New Democratic Party (NDP) has been claiming credit for the “major winter tax holiday” to be declared by Justin Trudeau and his Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.

On Nov. 20 when the Prime Minister returned to the House of Commons after attending APEC and G20 summits in Lima and Rio de Janeiro, he faced scathing attacks from the Leader of the Opposition party, Pierre Poilievre.

Jagmeet Singh, leader of the New Democrats, the fourth largest political party in the House of Commons, demanded the waiving of GST on essential items and services, including grocery and telecommunications, to boost the “affordability” of an average Canadian.

Jagmeet Singh happens to be the first politician of Indian descent to head a major political party in Canada.

Responding to his plea, Justin Trudeau, sought the NDP's support to “end obstructionism” of the Conservatives in the House of Commons so that the Government could carry out its agenda for Canadians.

The Conservatives had been demanding the tabling of documents relating to the “Slush green fund of Can $ 400 million’  maintaining that the minority Liberal government was refusing to honor the directive of the Speaker to place before the house documents related to the “slush” funds.

The Opposition has been raking the issue for more than six weeks.

Later, Jagmeet Singh, in a statement said:  “The NDP is delivering a winter tax holiday to Canadians. The prime minister’s office just informed us that he is partly caving to our Tax-Free-Essentials campaign.

“The NDP committed to removing the GST from daily essentials and monthly bills. While Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives are focused on themselves, New Democrats fought for affordability because everyday families are working harder than ever but still cutting back their grocery list and canceling activities their kids love. We are the party of working people, and we’re sick of billionaires getting tax breaks while regular families pay the price for years of inflation.

“On Thursday we expect the Liberal government to announce a winter GST holiday on several items in response to the NDP’s demands. It’s far from the substantial and permanent relief the NDP wants to give Canadians. As usual, the Liberals are letting people down with their choice to make this a short-term tax holiday, on only some items.

“The NDP will vote for this measure because working people are desperate for relief, and we’re proud we delivered for them again. Then we will campaign hard to permanently scrape the GST on daily essentials and monthly bills like we already promised.”
