The Jain Center of Southern California (JCSC), a leading Jain Center in America, inaugurated the Gyan Mandir in Buena Park last month.
This hand-carved structure, referred to as a Temple of Knowledge, stands adjacent to JCSC's historic Teakwood Temple, and is dedicated to the teachings of the 24 Tirthankaras aiming to integrate spirituality with education.
“The Gyan Mandir is more than a temple; it is a living testament to the timeless values of Jainism,” said Jasvant Modi, who, along with his wife, Meera Modi, played a pivotal role in the temple's creation. "By dedicating endowed chairs and promoting the Tirthankaras' teachings, we are fostering a legacy of knowledge and compassion that will inspire generations to come."
Originally commissioned by the British East India Company for the 1904 St. Louis Fair, the Teakwood Temple was later owned by Howard Hughes' estate before being relocated to its current site in 1987. Together, the temples symbolize the intersection of history, spirituality, and education.
The inauguration was attended by scholars, professors, and leaders in Jain studies, emphasizing the role of JCSC in fostering education and understanding of Jainism.
"This temple is a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern academia," Modi added, emphasizing the center's commitment to fostering moral leadership for contemporary challenges.
Modi, originally from Godhra, India, and an alumnus of B.J. Medical College, immigrated to the United States in 1975. Along with his wife, he has also supported endowed Jain chairs at universities to advance academic study of Jainism.
