California Governor Gavin Newsom has appointed India-born Jaya Badiga as a judge in the Sacramento County Superior Court. She fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Robert S. Lapham.

Badiga has served as a Commissioner at the Sacramento County Superior Court since 2022. Her legal career spans various roles, including a stint as a sole practitioner from 2018 to 2022.

In 2020, she was an attorney at the California Department of Health Care Services and worked at the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services in 2018.

From 2013 to 2018, Badiga was the managing attorney at WEAVE Inc., an organization dedicated to supporting survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. She also served as an attorney advisor at Galaxy Architects & Infrastructure from 2010 to 2013 and as staff counsel at the California Employment Development Department from 2009 to 2010.

Born in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, India, Badiga completed her early education in Hyderabad. She earned her Juris Doctor degree from Santa Clara University School of Law and a Master of Arts in International Relations and International Communications from Boston University.

She cleared the California State Bar exam in 2009. Badiga’s extensive background in law and her recent role as a commissioner in Sacramento County’s Superior Court are seen as significant assets as she transitions into her new position as a judge.

Her appointment is part of a larger announcement by Governor Newsom, who named 18 new Superior Court judges across California. These appointments include judges in Alameda, Contra Costa, Fresno, Kern, Los Angeles, Marin, Merced, Nevada, Orange, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura, and Yolo counties.
