Lieutenant Colonel Kamal S. Kalsi, an Indian-origin U.S. Army veteran and physician, has been named for the Civic Engagement Award at the 31st Annual Asian Pacific American Institute for Congressional Studies (APAICS) Awards Gala, a prestigious event that celebrates the contributions of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA & NH/PI) leaders across the country.

The event is set for May.13, 2025, at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.

Capt. Kamal Kalsi first arrived in the United States from India when he was just a two-year-old toddler. Now a fourth-generation military serviceman, Kalsi’s roots trace back to his great-grandfather, who served in the Royal British Army, and his grandfather and father, both of whom served in the Indian Air Force. Continuing that legacy on American soil, Kalsi has become a decorated Army officer and a fierce advocate for civil rights and religious freedom in the military.

The APAICS Annual Awards Gala is the centerpiece of the nation’s celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, held every May. The evening brings together more than 1,200 attendees from across the country, an assembly of community organizers, business innovators, and political trailblazers.

Over the years, the Gala has hosted some of the most influential voices in American politics and culture, including President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, Secretary Hillary Clinton, and Surgeon General Vivek Murthy.

This year’s ceremony, to be held under the honorary co-chairmanship of Senator Andy Kim of New Jersey and Representative Judy Chu of California, will pay tribute to five distinguished honorees for their outstanding work within the AA & NH/PI community.

Alongside Kalsi, the 2025 awardees include Vicky Nguyen (Vision Award), the Asian & Pacific Islander American Health Forum (Community Leadership Achievement Award), Susan Jin Davis (Stewardship Award), and Krystal Ka‘ai Hetherington (Pioneer Award).
