Kannan Srinivasan wins Democratic nomination in Virginia special election
Srinivasan will be on the ballot on Jan. 7, 2025 aiming to preserve the slim Democratic majority in the state Senate.

In a closely contested special election, Virginia House Delegate Kannan Srinivasan has emerged victorious, securing the Democratic nomination for the 32nd Senate District seat vacated by State Senator Suhas Subramanyam, who recently won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Srinivasan, the first Indian American immigrant elected to the Virginia House, expressed deep gratitude to the nearly 6,000 voters who participated in the election, marking a record turnout. “Over the past nine days, it has been my privilege and joy to spend every moment connecting with the incredible people of District 32. Each conversation has reminded me of just how great our community is filled with diverse voices, shared values, and a deep commitment to progress.”
“My passion for service and resolve to give back to this district has only grown stronger. look forward to delivering on the promises of this campaign in the weeks ahead to secure a Democratic Majority in the State Senate, listen to the concerns of our community. and continue to be a highly effective legislator who delivers results and keeps Virginia moving forward,” Srinivasan said.
Srinivasan will now face Tumay Harding, an education activist in the election on Jan. 7, 2025. The results of this election will be crucial as it will determine who will control the state senate, which currently holds a narrow Democratic majority, with 21 Democrats and 19 Republicans.

If Srinivasan wins, the chamber will remain blue however if he loses it will be evenly split, and Republican Lt. Governor Winsome Sears will have the tie-breaking vote.

Aiming to preserve the slim Democratic majority in the state Senate, Srinivasan’s campaign focused on key issues such as reproductive rights, healthcare, gun safety, and countering what he described as “Trump-era extremism.”
With support from prominent figures, including Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger and House Speaker Don Scott, Srinivasan highlighted the stakes of the race, emphasizing the need to maintain Democratic control.
