Sales of a book written by F.B.I. Director Kash Patel surged nearly 800 percent after Mayor Eric Adams publicly endorsed it multiple times following the dismissal of his federal corruption case.
The book, ‘Government Gangsters: The Deep State, the Truth and the Battle for Our Democracy’, claims a powerful “deep state” operates within the federal government to undermine political opponents. Patel alleges that unelected bureaucrats are working behind the scenes to subvert democratic processes.

According to The New York Times, print sales of Government Gangsters rose from 228 copies to 2,019 during the week of March 30 to April 5 — the highest weekly sales since its release in October 2023. The book also made its debut on The Times nonfiction best-seller list at No. 14 and reached No. 11 on Amazon’s “most sold” nonfiction rankings.
Mayor Adams first promoted the book during a news conference at Gracie Mansion, just hours after federal charges against him were dismissed. He held up a copy of the book and encouraged New Yorkers to read it. He reiterated that recommendation across multiple platforms, including an appearance on the Flagrant podcast and an interview with Fox 5 New York.
The book’s surge in popularity coincided with Adams’s public embrace of its central themes. On the Flagrant podcast, Adams discussed the concept of a “deep state,” suggesting that his legal troubles may have stemmed from his criticism of former President Joe Biden’s immigration policies — an assertion federal prosecutors have denied.
Patel’s book advances the theory that federal institutions are politically weaponized and identifies 60 individuals he claims are part of the so-called deep state. The list includes former President Joe Biden, former vice President Kamala Harris, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
