Two prominent members of the British Indian community, Raminder Singh Ranger, a Conservative Party peer, and Anil Bhanot, managing trustee of the Hindu Council UK, have had their honors stripped by King Charles III of the United Kingdom.

The decision, made upon recommendations from the UK’s Forfeiture Committee, was formalized and published in The London Gazette.

Ranger, a multi-millionaire entrepreneur and founder of consumer goods company Sun Mark, has been stripped of his Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) honour, while Bhanot, an accountant and community leader, has lost his Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) distinction. Both individuals are now required to return their insignias to Buckingham Palace and are no longer permitted to reference their honours.

The Forfeiture Committee, tasked with reviewing cases of misconduct among individuals holding UK honours, cited the need to uphold the integrity of the honours system. Media reports suggest Ranger’s CBE was revoked due to allegations of “bringing the honours system into disrepute.” A House of Lords investigation last year found Ranger in breach of its parliamentary Code of Conduct over claims of “bullying and harassment.”

The London Gazette statement read, “The King has directed that the appointment of Raminder Singh, Baron Ranger to be a Commander of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated Dec 31, 2015, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order.”

The Forfeiture Committee also reportedly considered complaints against Ranger from the Sikh separatist group Sikhs for Justice, as well as allegations that he made derogatory remarks about journalists and public figures on social media.

Bhanot Denies islamophobia accusations

Anil Bhanot, who runs a community centre in Leicester, faced accusations of Islamophobia over tweets concerning Hindus in Bangladesh in 2021. While he stated that complaints filed with the Institute of Chartered Accountants and the Charity Commission had cleared him, the Forfeiture Committee recommended revoking his OBE.
