Vibhu Paudyal has been appointed as professor of health services research and inequalities in the faculty of nursing, midwifery, and palliative care (NMPC) at King’s College London.
He will lead sustainable, high-quality, applied health research which will benefit local and global communities. In addition, he will be responsible for forging interdisciplinary partnerships that increase the quality of NMPC research and education to benefit society.
Paudyal’s research primarily focuses on understanding and mitigating inequalities, particularly in people who face multiple and severe disadvantages. His work has offered substantial evidence of the disparities in health and access to healthcare faced by people experiencing homelessness, an official statement from the College said.
Paudyal is also leading National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) health service research and delivery (HS&DR) funded trial to test a model of care that involves integrated health, social, and practical support for people experiencing homelessness.
His research includes people who experience problem drug use, severe mental health issues, and those with physical and mental comorbidities (multiple psychiatric disorders).
Through his research background in clinical pharmacy and medicines use, Paudyal work aims to develop novel roles for non-medical prescribers (such as nurses and pharmacists) in care provision for people who face exclusion.
Commenting on his appointment, Paudyal said, “It is truly an honor to be joining a world-leading research and teaching faculty at King’s. Growing inequalities in society have necessitated innovative ways of collaboration across sectors and disciplines, and King’s offers an ideal place to connect with diverse experts to design and deliver interdisciplinary programmes of research that serve the global community.”
Paudyal is a fellow and the associate editor of the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, an ESCP flagship journal. He was previously the chair of the Research Committee of the European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP).
He is also an associate professor in clinical pharmacy and pharmacy practice at the University of Birmingham and has been nominated twice for outstanding teaching awards at the university.
Lauding Paudyal’s knowledge in public health, professor Irene Higginson, executive dean of Florence Nightingale faculty of nursing, midwifery and palliative care, said, “Vibhu’s knowledge and expertise in pharmacy and public health will further enhance our faculty’s work in exploring and addressing health inequality, enabling us to continue devising and evaluating innovative ways to improve and transform health and care for all.”
