“Kripa is widely recognized for his significant contributions in the field of interfacial science, thermal fluids, electrochemical systems, and advanced materials. It’s remarkable to see the tangible impact Kripa’s ventures have made across such a wide range of fields,” Anantha P. Chandrakasan, dean of the School of Engineering said.

Established in 2002 through a gift from philanthropists Desh and Jaishree Deshpande, the Deshpande Center supports innovation at MIT by funding early-stage technology development and commercialization.

Varanasi, who was an MIT graduate student when the center was founded, said the center played a key role in inspiring his own entrepreneurial journey. “Over the years, the center has built a storied legacy as a one-of-a-kind institution for propelling university-invented technologies to commercialization. Many amazing companies have come out of this program, shaping industries and making a real impact,” Varanasi said.

A member of the MIT faculty since 2009, Varanasi has co-founded six companies, including LiquiGlide and Infinite Cooling, and has received numerous accolades for both research and mentorship. He succeeds Angela Koehler, who served as faculty director from July 2023 to March 2025. Koehler will continue her work at MIT as faculty lead of the Health and Life Sciences Collaborative.
