Indian-origin Krish Patel, a senior at Massac County High School, has been awarded the prestigious Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) Chancellor’s Scholarship. The full-ride scholarship covers tuition, mandatory fees, on-campus housing, and food for four years.

The $107,000 scholarship ensures Patel can obtain his bachelor’s degree at SIUC without financial burden. He is among 34 high-achieving high school seniors selected for the 2025 Chancellor’s Scholarship.

Patel, the son of Pankaj and Hetal Patel of Metropolis, was surprised with the scholarship when SIUC Chancellor Austin A. Lane and other university officials visited his school on Feb.3. As the delegation announced his name, Patel covered his mouth in shock before stepping forward to accept the honor, according to WSPD local news.

Patel’s decision to attend SIUC was heavily influenced by his older sister, Rajvi, a junior at the university.

“Chancellor’s Scholars imagine bold goals and then work to make them a reality, even when it defies the odds,” Chancellor Austin A. Lane said. “I am excited to personally congratulate these Salukis on receiving Southern’s highest honor for freshmen.”

SIUC officials, including Brown Dawg, the university’s mascot, traveled across Southern Illinois and the Metro East regions to surprise 31 students in person. The remaining scholarship recipients learned of their awards during a Zoom session on Feb.4 afternoon.

The highly competitive scholarship saw over 600 high school students participate in the selection process. Winners demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, leadership, and involvement in extracurricular activities. The award is renewable for three additional years, provided recipients maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
