Members of KhushDC, a social, support and political group that provides a safe and supportive environment for LGBTQ, and additional gender or sexual minority South Asians in the Washington, DC metropolitan area walked in the The Capital Pride Parade on June.8.

The parade was an expression of pride. Couples had flown in and driven down from outside the city to celebrate this one day they have claimed in the calendar as theirs. The rainbow hung in shop windows in various forms weeks ahead in anticipation of the parade. June is celebrated as pride month.

Innovative decorations, swathes of clothes or beach balls in the rainbow color bobbed in the light breeze that blew the parade goers on to the street. Many surprised by the festivities decided to join in unplanned.

“I am visiting from Maryland for the day and saw the action. What a fun thing. So we decided to join in,” said a Sikh who had absorbed the joie de vivre in the air.
