Indian American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi represented the Hindu community at the National Prayer Breakfast on Feb. 6, at the United States Capitol, Washington, D.C., where he recited the Gayatri Mantra.
During his prayer, Congressman Krishnamoorthi described the Gayatri Mantra as “one of the most sacred and auspicious verses in the Hindu faith.” After reciting it in Sanskrit, he shared the verses’ meaning in English:
“We meditate on the divine radiance of the Supreme Being, the source of life, who is worthy of worship. May that divine light enlighten and guide our intellect toward righteousness and truth.”
The National Prayer Breakfast is a longstanding tradition that brings members of Congress together to share a meal and pray for the nation, the President, and leaders around the world. Since 1953, this annual event, organized by the National Prayer Breakfast Foundation, has promoted unity, reflection, and reconciliation.
It welcomes people of all faiths and encourages bipartisan fellowship. Every U.S. president has participated, highlighting its importance as a moment of collective prayer and hope for the country and beyond.
Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s participation marked a significant moment for Hindu representation at the event. His words resonated with the diverse audience, highlighting common spiritual aspirations that unite people of different faiths.
“It was an honor to address the National Prayer Breakfast this morning with my colleagues and represent the Hindu community at an event focused on uniting American communities,” said Krishnamoorthi while reflecting on the event.
“While we are a nation of countless faiths, we are united by our shared values and humanity. I was grateful for the opportunity to share the Gayatri Mantra with my colleagues as we work to expand the circle of inclusion to Americans of all faiths.”
