Leading voices in AI discuss innovation and opportunities at Stanford India Dialogue

In a recent panel discussion at the Stanford India Dialogue organized by CIPET, industry leaders explored the vast potential of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in India. The panellists expressed optimism about the future of AI, particularly in uncovering innovative use cases that are yet to be fully realized.

Jishnu Bhattacharjee, Managing Director of Nexus Venture Partners, emphasized India's prominence as the largest developer hub and the leading user of open-source technology. He highlighted the rapid experimentation with open-source tools, recognizing their significant impact on AI advancements over the past 18 to 24 months.

Addressing the human element in AI, Manthan Shah, Principal at Westbridge Capital, noted India's advantage in leveraging the workforce in service sectors. He highlighted the concept of "human in the loop" as crucial for delivering the last-mile value in AI applications. Shah anticipates the emergence of diverse business models in India, combining AI capabilities with human involvement.

Dave V Khare, Partner at Lightspeed India, highlighted the dual role of Indian investors, emphasizing the opportunity for AI to serve both the global and domestic markets. Khare discussed a recent AI hackathon in Bangalore, where a winning company showcased a simple yet impactful solution. The winning company allowed users to take a photo of a government document in any of the 18 nationally recognized languages and ask questions about it, showcasing the potential for practical AI applications in India.

The panellists agreed that the majority of future AI innovation will revolve around discovering novel use cases, as the current landscape is yet to reveal its full potential. As investors continue to explore opportunities, there is a collective belief in India's capacity to contribute significantly to the evolving field of artificial intelligence.
