Letter from India: Plus ça change

If the goal of “Viksit Bharat” is to be achieved by 2047, the country will need fundamental changes in the mindset of politicians and citizens, including a willingness to recognize the reality of these challenges without buying into the hype that “India has arrived.”

A visit to India is always an occasion to both marvel at how much has changed and how much hasn’t in the decades since India opened its economy and mindset in the early 90s.

Amazon’s Indian operation delivers everything from shampoos to wide screen monitors within hours with same day delivery, and Blinkit even offers groceries in ten minutes delivered to your doorstep. And yet the Mumbai-Goa Highway has been under construction since 2011, with perpetual promises of completion by “next” year, which never comes!
