Long Island Punjabis celebrate Vaisakhi

The Mela team made a generous contribution to a volunteer's family during the event

In observance of the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi, the Long Island Punjabi Circle held their 4th annual Vaisakhi Mela (fair) at Nassau Community College earlier this month. 

Dignitaries including Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman, New York State Senator Steve Rhoads, Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, NY Assemblyman Jake Blumencranz and John K. Mikulin, NC Human Rights Commission Chairman Bobby Kumar Kalotee, ICC T-20 World Cup Chairman Harry Singh Bolla graced the event and gave speeches.

The fair featured a lineup of food stalls, retail shops, a raffle booth, a kids section and corporate booths offering various services. United Mortgage was the grand sponsor of the event.

Famous Punjabi singer Gulab Sidhu, Indian Idol Khuda Baksh, Voice of Punjab Harmanpreet Kaur and others performed during the event. Cultural Bhangra and Giddha performances were also showcased.

Continuing their tradition of helping a family every year, the organizing team made a $2500 donation to late volunteer Davinder Singh’s family.Apart from the $2500 contribution from the team, Harry Singh Bolla of Bolla Oil donated $5000. 

The Vaisakhi Mela was organized in support of Nassau County office of Asian Affairs, Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC), New York Kabaddi Club. The next mela was set for the third Sunday of 2025.
